Tom has come out to see me in Amman. He got here on Tuesday and is staying for three weeks. We're going to head down to Petra and Wadi Rum next week with some friends (inshallah) but for now poor old Tom has had to mosey around Amman on his own whilst I've been at work. Yesterday morning we headed down to the Citadel - otherwise known as Jabal al Qal'a - which is a clifftop nestled deep in downtown Amman. It's got cracking views and it's got a ridiculous amount of history. It seems like every historical era and their dog has had something going on at this site. There's evidence that it was occupied during the neolithic period (1800 BC) and since then it has accumulated Byzantine, Roman and Ummayad artefacts. Very impressive.
I wanted to make sure that we got down to the citadel when the call to prayer was going on as it is truly amazing - the sounds of the mosques spreads over the city in a domino-esque fashion and hearing the echoes of the muezzin is beautiful. We managed to get in a taxi with the slowest taxi driver Amman has ever had, so we missed the beginning but managed to hear it halfway through. It was great being back there after all this time - I used to love coming to the citadel, so it was lovely to see how much more has been excavated and how little the stunning downtown views have changed.
We wandered around the different artefacts and had some fun taking pictures on the Roman columns. Japes ensued.
